Surgery & Treatment for scoliosis

The two primary goals of surgery are to stop the curve from progressing during adulthood and reducing spinal deformity. Surgery is recommended only when the spinal curve is greater than 40 degrees and there are signs of progression.

Surgical options include:

  • Spinal fusion. In this procedure, two or more of the bones in the spine (vertebrae) are connected together so they can't move independently.
  • Expanding rod. If the scoliosis is progressing rapidly at a young age, one or two expandable rods can be attached along the spine that can adjust in length as the child grows.
  • Vertebral body tethering. This procedure can be performed through small incisions. Screws are placed along the outside edge of the abnormal spinal curve and a strong, flexible cord is threaded through the screws. When the cord is tightened, the spine straightens.

Recovery

During the first few days, patients will need plenty of rest. After surgery during the first few days your doctor may have you stand and walk short. During discharge, your doctor will provide instructions for all the home care, such as what medications to take and any exercises you should do.
